North of Nelson Book Club

Something fun for readers who like to talk about books is almost packed. Here is the list so far, with a few notes from the road.

Field notes · October 2026

Packing for the drive up to Nelson

  • Packed: Questions for the fire. Fourteen of them, written and tried out loud.
  • Packed: Cards for the table. Twelve, and well shuffled.
  • Packed: Instructions for the shops. In plain words, for whoever runs the counter.
  • Not yet: Shovel out the truck. More snow than expected. As usual.
  • Not yet: Find the road to Nelson. It is on no map, because Nelson does not exist. Going anyway.
  • Not yet: Tack a notice up at the general store. For events, once the hammer warms up.
  • Not yet: Put the kettle on. The downloads are coming soon.
A first look at the book club kit: a printed reading guide beside three fill-in-the-blank conversation cards, shaded slightly because they are not ready yet.
A first look, still in the shade.

What is loading

  • A book club guide for North of Nelson: how to split each volume across meetings, and fourteen questions that work for any of them.
  • A deck of twelve fill-in-the-blank conversation cards, drawn at random, written in the voice of the book. Free to print for your club or your shop.
  • Upcoming events from the press and its friends in the Upper Peninsula writing world.

Want the first copy?

Write to orders@silvermountainpress.com and say “book club.” We will send the guide and the cards the moment they are ready. Nothing is collected here: this page has no form.

While the snow settles and the stove warms up, the books are in the shop. Every volume stands on its own, so a club can start anywhere.
